Klang_Insel has been developped for Gare du Nord in Basel. We created an interactive, acousmatic lounge. A collection of interactive sound games.
Center of the room was a table with four comfortable chairs around it. The table had a whole in its middle through wich the table could be feet with tennisballs. The table reacted with gasps and blurps.
Each of the chairs was sensitive and played music if protagonist was sitting. Inside the chairs were speakers and on the back of the chair a shakerspeaker. Each chair had a Game:
The Shaker:
This chair has a joystick and a fire button. The joystick selects the chair that has to be shaked. The firebutton starts shaking.
Wall of Light:
This chair was opposite to a wall made of glass. Behind this wall of glass there were a lot of lights in different colours. The protagonist controlled the lamps with buttons and dimmers.
Starbeams:
A chair with two laser pointers. The protagonist can focus the laser beams to photoresistors hanging over the chair. Photoresistors were in the shape of stars and arranged in the pattern of the great bear. Stars are singing and playing sounds depending on the combination of the stars.
Moderator:
Chair with microphone, joystick and pitchshifter. Microphone runs through pitchshifter Joystick choses chair in wich the output of pitchshifter is heard. Posibility of phrase recording and playback
Around this setup of chairs and table there were eigth speakers. The soundscape that was played through this speakers was created by the interpretation of a network of sensors. Sensors were set over the whole building. Detection of movement of people in rooms, doors, aktivity on stairs, toilette, etc....
Aditional object was a reactive aquarium that changed light, started sound and water movement with proximity of protagonist.
There were a collection of books in that we build speakers in and put sensors on the pages. So we could detect wich page is open. Books played soundfiles depending on the content of the page.
